Due to the current extremely dry conditions, the City of Yellowknife is implementing a fire ban effective starting Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 12 p.m. (noon). The fire ban will stay in place for as long as the conditions remain dry and the fire danger ratings for the North Slave region remain high to extreme.

The fine for setting an unauthorized fire is $200. The Yellowknife Fire Division monitors fires within city limits. If an illegal fire is identified, the Municipal Enforcement Division (MED) is notified to provide enforcement.

This ban prohibits any open-air burning within city limits, including the use of approved fire pits, and will remain in place until further notice. However, the use of camp stoves and enclosed BBQs is allowed. Propane-fueled burners are also permitted for heating and/or cooking purposes but must be operated within the confines of a fire pit.

“The fire ban is a proactive measure to reduce the risk of fires starting from camp fires, bonfires or other open sourced flames within city limits. We all have a role to play in preventing wildfire,” said Yellowknife Fire Chief, Nelson Johnson.

The fire ban does not apply to Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approved propane appliances.
