Environment Canada is warning of temperatures near minus 50 Wednesday morning in the North Slave region, including Behchoko, Whati and Wekweeti.
Fifteen kilometre per hour winds and cold temperatures are behind the extreme cold this morning. Temperarures will rise in the afternoon and wind chill will moderate.
Extreme cold warnings are issued when there is an increased risk of frost bite, hypothermia and other health risks.
People should watch for the following cold-related symptoms: ‘shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.’ They should also cover up their skin as frostbite can develop in minutes on exposed skin.
