Air support, suppression efforts aided by light winds helps slow Hay River wildfire growth

Wlidfire crews battling against the blaze near Hay River say light wind conditions helped crews in their efforts to slow down the growth of the fire on Tuesday. According to the GNWT update released Wednesday afternoon, aircraft and helicopters were able to get in the to also lend a hand in fire suppression efforts, as as southern end of the fire from Alexandra Falls to the Alberta border remains very active.

Crews were able to extinguish what’s called the finger of the fire, by Paradise Gardens through helicopter Tuesday, with crews on the ground making waves on another section of the blaze. On Wednesday, crews will continue to put out hot spots in the Enterprise area, as well as continue to add mitigation efforts around remaining structures.

Wednesday’s forecast is expected to increase fire activity, as strong winds are expected to blow across the region Thursday, along with a chance of rain.
