Containment lines hold in Hay River, “significant” hotspots to be addressed

Warm, sunny skies in Hay River yesterday with temperatures reaching 20 degrees led to strong fire behaviour and activity during the peak burning day.

As residents continue their return to the K’átł’odeeche First Nation and Hay River, NWT Fire is warning residents they should prepare to see increased fire behaviour to the east of the river with large plumes of smoke continuing today.

Containment lines continue to hold throughout the Hay River Corridor; however, scans have revealed “significant” hotspots remaining in the community of Enterprise and along the highway. Work to address these issues has begun and will continue in collaboration with the community.

Officials say aerial support and tightlining remain a top priority and the current goal is to have a cat guard perimeter that is tightlined through the removal of fuels away from the fire’s edge.
