GNWT to receive $750,000 in arts and culture funding through the Canada Council for the Arts

The GNWT and the Canada Council for the Arts have announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in support of the arts and culture industry in the NWT.

According to the GNWT, the partnership will provide $750,000 to the territorial government over a period of three years.

This co-delivery partnership will assist NWT artists by supporting capacity-building of regional community arts organizations,” Minister of Culture R.J. Simpson says.

With the new funding, the GNWT has introduced framework to recruit a full-time Arts Advisor, create funding programming for eligible arts and culture organizations, including Indigenous organizations outside Yellowknife, and increase access to funding for northern art organizations.

Building stronger regional organizations will increase opportunities for the public to experience and engage with the arts in meaningful ways,” Simpson adds.

The GNWT adds that the partnership aligns with the Canada Council’s commitment to meet the unique cultural varieties in Northern Canada, and supports the GNWT’s fourth goal of the territorial Arts Strategy to strengthen the arts sector through federal and territorial funding.
