Feds announce $24 million investment for permanent Wellness and Recovery Centre in Yellowknife

NWT MP Michael McLeod has announced construction of the new Wellness and Recovery Centre in Yellowknife will begin due to a $24 million investment from the Government of Canada.

Through the federal Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) program, the Centre aims to provide a home for services supporting populations experiencing homelessness, hunger, addictions, and mental health challenges.

According to the federal government, the Centre will provide access to essential supports and cultural programming. Additionally, the Government of Canada says the site will serve as a hub for health and social programs such as counselling.

“This new facility will provide essential social services in an enhanced facility that replaces the current temporary sobering centre,” MP McLeod says.

The Centre will also feature various energy-efficient features, such as an LED lighting system, biomass boiler and Heat Recovery Ventilator to cycle the heat throughout the building.
