Two NWT families have just been given brand new homes from Habitat for Humanity.
Two celebrations took place this week to welcome the families to their homes, one in Hay River on May 14th, and the other in Yellowknife in May 15th. The houses themselves were organized by Habitat for Humanity Northwest Territories, with the help of local volunteers, community partners, and various donors.

The Hay River family had already been living in the home since 2023, but the Key ceremony had to be delayed to this year after Hay River’s multiple evacuations.

The Government of Canada had set aside $60 million through the Affordable Housing Fund to help address the housing needs of the north. The funding is currently being rolled out to offset higher construction costs, which are caused by the unique building challenges in the NWT. The funding is also set aside to help the most at risk members of the communities, such as women, their children, people with disabilities, and seniors.
Michael McLeod, Member of Parliament for the Northwest Territories, said in a statement that “as a government we are committed to working with organizations like Habitat for Humanity to ensure that all Canadians have a safe and affordable place to call their own. I am very happy to see these families get the keys for their new homes and I wish them the very best as they start this new chapter in their lives.”
