One of the North’s more unique special events is coming up once again.
The Northern Mining Health and Safety Forum is putting together the 2024 NWT/NU Mine Rescue Competition. This event will take place on June 14th and 15th at the Yellowknife Multiplex Arena, and will see various teams take part in several different events, all themed around mine rescue operations.
Some of the activities the teams will be performing include rope rescues, written exams, firefighting, first aid, smoke searches, and obstacle courses. These competitions mark the end of NWT Mining Week, and as part of the celebration, they will be bringing back the Miners’ Picnic on Saturday, June 15th.
The teams that will be participating in the events are:
Surface
- Agnico Eagle Meadowbank Gold Mine (Nunavut)
- Baffinland Mary River Mine (Nunavut)
- Burgundy Ekati Diamond Mine (NWT)
- De Beers Group/Mountain Province Diamonds Gahcho Kué Diamond Mine (NWT)
Underground

In the past, the Miners’ Picnic would regularly see crowds of up to 1,000 residents. This year is expected to see equivalent crowds, as this will be the first time the event has been held since 2019.
