YK Co-op donates $10k to United Way NWT

The Yellowknife Co-op has just made a donation of $10,000 to the United Way group.

The goal of the donation is to help United Way to be prepared for any potential emergencies that may arise later in the summer, after last year’s wildfire evacuations caused a great deal of strife for so many people.

Jeff Kincaid, a representative of the Co-op, shared that the store always tries to take an active role in the community.

“We’re community focussed, we’re owned by members of this community, and so we’ve always loved giving back and being as big a part of the community as we can be. We’ve partnered with them [United Way] many times over the last couple years with the needs that we’ve had with forest fires and evacuations, so we kind of want to get out ahead of it this year, make sure that they have some funding, make sure that we’re there to help in any way that we can.”

Paul Gillard, the Chair of United Way NWT, share what this donation means for the group.

“Regrettably, there’s been strong pressure on our not-for-profits, especially in the smaller communities, to step up, to help out communities that are facing unprecedented times. COVID, floods, fires again this year.

This money is absolutely going to be doing good for not-for-profits in the hands of people that run them in smaller communities.”

Gillard expressed his thanks and appreciation to the Co-op for their donation.
