Tips for Avoiding Negative Health Effects from Smoke

The City of Yellowknife has shared some advice on how Northerners can protect themselves from exposure to smoke from wildfires.

As we approach the apex of the summer, warm and dry conditions will become more common, and the Territory is preparing for smoky conditions across the board, much like what was seen last year.

To start, the Air Quality Health Index is constantly monitored and updated, and the results and current conditions can be found on the Government of Canada Website. The Index can be found by clicking here.

If there is smoke in the area, there are several things that can be done to reduce the impact it can have on one’s health. Refrain from smoking cigarettes indoors, use a mop to clean floors instead of a vacuum, and refrain from using incense, candles, and wood stoves. These methods can help keep indoor air pollution low.

There are also ways that one can prevent air from the outside from getting inside the house. Make sure windows and doors are properly sealed, install high-quality air filters when possible, make sure HVAC systems are set up to recirculate air, and limit the use of exhaust fans when nobody is cooking.

Wildfire smoke can affect different people in different ways. Anyone who has a preexisting respiratory and cardiovascular conditions are at an increased risk of feeling the negative effects of smoke, as are infants and young children, elderly people, pregnant people, and even people who are participating in sports or other strenuous outdoor activities.

Some of the symptoms that can be experienced from prolonged exposure to wildfire smoke include sore eyes, tears, runny nose, and cough. If these symptoms persist or become worse, residents are advised to contact their local health care provider.
