The community of Tsiigehtchic has just been officially recognized as a Hamlet.
This decision has retroactively taken effect on July 1st. A vote was taken by the community on May 23rd of last year, where 76% of voters supported the decision.
This status change will result in two important changes: A Hamlet council, and a band council. Now that the community is a Hamlet, the operations of the government are more easily defined. Any resident who is able to vote is also able to run for Mayor and Councillor positions.
The first election for a new Mayor and Council for Tsiigehtchic will take place on December 9th. The Hamlet’s council will be comprised of the Mayor and eight other Councillors, all of whom will hold their offices for two years.
Until that time, Grant Scott will continue in his role as Administrator to guide the community during this transitionary period. He will be overseeing the community government and their actions until the new Mayor and Council officially take their seats on January 6th of 2025.
