Two Yellowknife Motorists Arrested for Impaired Driving

Yellowknife RCMP recently arrested two drivers who were both under the influence of drugs.

The first incident occurred on July 8th, when an RCMP Traffic officer witnessed a vehicle speed through two different school zones in Downtown Yellowknife. The driver was quickly stopped and was found with clear signs of impairment. The officer conducted Field Sobriety Tests, which the driver failed and was then taken into custody. The driver was later released after a Drug Recognition Expert performed an evaluation.

The second incident occurred on July 10th, where Yellowknife officers were informed of a driver who appeared to be falling asleep at the wheel. Officers were able to locate the driver, who proceeded to fail the Field Sobriety Tests. This driver was arrested and also subjected to an examination from a Drug Recognition Expert, whereupon he was released from custody.

Both of these cases remain under investigation, and no charges have been issued at this time.

Impaired Driving remains a leading criminal cause of death in Canada. Many drug-impaired (especially cannabis-impaired) drivers believe they are sober and capable of driving, underestimating the impact of drugs on their motor skills and reactions times.
