The GNWT has shared the winners of this year’s Alfred Moses and Tom Williams Memorial Scholarships, celebrating NWT students enrolled in a range of housing-related programs.
A total of 12 scholarships, each valued at $1,000, have been awarded to various students across the Territory.
The recipients are as follows:
Beaufort-Delta — Mary-Leigh Firth (Fort McPherson) and James Blake (Aklavik)
Sahtú — Haiden Duncan (Norman Wells) and Shakira Ellton (Délı̨nę)
Nahendeh — Tyeron J. Lennie (Fort Simpson) and Natalie Jade Villeneuve (Fort Simpson)
South Slave — Jada Beck (Hay River) and Rogan Young Pine (Fort Providence)
Tłı̨chǫ — Nelson J. Mantla (Behchokǫ̀) and Sierra Apples (Behchokǫ̀)
North Slave — James M. Rose (Yellowknife) and Stella Wong (Yellowknife)
Both of these scholarships give support to students who are enrolled in certificate, diploma, and degree programs involved in housing. They are open to all students in the NWT, and not only do they provide financial support, but they also make sure to recognize young Indigenous leaders and role models in communities across the territory.
Lucy Kuptana, the Minister Responsible for Housing NWT, gave her congratulations to the recipients, saying that “the territory and its growing housing needs are in good hands with these future carpenters, welders, engineers, business administrators, electricians and healthcare professionals. In order to improve housing and better support communities across the territory, we need to invest in NWT youth – this will not only give them a leg up in their education and careers, but also will help strengthen the territory’s workforce and create more housing solutions.”
Both of these scholarships were established in 2023.
