Two men in Hay River were recently arrested after being found with several firearms and a large amount of cash.
On July 19th, Hay River officers were informed of suspicious activity around a travel trailer that was unlawfully parked on Town property. RCMP investigated the scene with a Town bylaw officer, while occupants of the trailer were trying to keep people away.
The two occupants were arrested and a search warrant was secured for the investigation. Officers discovered $17,000 in cash, which is suspected to be the proceeds of crime. Officers also found four stolen firearms and a few other weapons.
After the investigation, 22-year-old Rukundo Fota of Alberta and 36-year-old Brian Swallow of Hay River have both been charged with:
- Mischief Under $5,000
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Possession of a Weapon Obtained by Crime
- Unsafe Storage of Firearms, and
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
Fota was held to appear before a Justice of the Peace and subsequently released on a release order to appear in court August 26th . Swallow was released on an Undertaking to appear in court September 26th.
