McLeod Announces $300k to Energy Efficient Homes in Fort McPherson

As a part of the Federal Government’s Canada Green Buildings Strategy, it was recently announced that a total of $305,000 will be going towards supporting energy efficient homes in Fort McPherson.

The announcement was made by Michael McLeod, the Member of Parliament for the NWT, who was speaking on behalf of the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. The money will be used by Dinjii Zhuh Solutions, an energy company in Fort McPherson that focusses on clean and renewable projects. They will be assisting local homeowners in reducing how much energy is used by their homes by providing energy audits and implementing efficiency upgrades.

The first phase of their plan will focus on the energy audits and upgrades. They will be looking into any appliances around the house that can be replaced with more energy efficient alternatives, as well as performing insulation and draft proofing upgrades to 30 different homes. These audits will also be able to show if homes need additional services such as foundation repair, HVAC upgrades, and window replacement for future retrofits.

In a statement, Michael McLeod said that “Creating more energy efficient homes is a major priority for the Northwest Territories. The more that we invest in green infrastructure, the more that Northerners get to save on energy costs and the less impact we make on our environment. This investment helps to support Indigenous and community-based solutions to make homes more affordable and reliable.”

The Canada Green Buildings Strategy has previously provided up to $800 million to other areas of the country to achieve similar goals of cutting pollution and trying to help Canadians save money.
