Hay River Fish Plant construction ends, fish processing to begin in the winter season

The GNWT has announced the construction phase of the Hay River Fish Plant has ended and the facility is set to begin processing fish for NWT commercial fishermen during the winter season.

According to the GNWT, more fish is needed for the new plant to maximize production and financial compensation for Great Slave Lake fishers immediately.

As a result, the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation has been contracted by the territorial government to run the new plant for three years to assist its transition and grow the fish processing capabilities of the facility.

The territory maintains the long-term goal is to return the management and operations of the restored commercial fishing industry to local companies who work directly on Great Slave.

The $21.7 Million project marks a significant step in the GNWT’s ongoing Great Slave Lake Commercial Fishing Revitalization Strategy, with the hope that operation of the fish plant will help support local food security concerns at a local level.
