NWT authorities apprehend one after 12-hour standoff with police

An individual reportedly suffering from a mental health crisis has been apprehended by Aklavik authorities after reports of an assault that occurred on September 15th.

According to the Aklavik RCMP, reports came in early Sunday morning that indicated a person had been assaulted by a subject.

Police quickly attended the subject’s residence to investigate, and officers contacted the individual before determining they were in the midst of a mental health crisis and allegedly in possession of a weapon. The person then proceeded to barricade themselves inside the residence.

Law enforcement indicates that due to the high-risk nature of the situation, officers from the Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiation Team were necessary in the proceeding events.
