NWT Premier R.J. Simpson has released a statement following the passing of beloved public servant and former MLA, Tony Whitford.
In a release, the Premier says the whole of the Northwest Territories lost a “staunch supporter” and a “dedicated servant of the people” in Mr. Anthony “Tony” Whitford.
“My deepest condolences to his family, friends and all those who knew and respected him,” he says.
Whitford is described as serving the NWT in a number of capacities, and has the unique distinction of being the only person to have served in the NWT Legislative Assembly as an elected member, a Cabinet Minister, Speaker, and as Sergeant-of-Arms. He also served as Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner of the NWT.
During his life, Whitford was honoured with an Order of the NWT in 2016 for his years of dedicated service.
Premier Simpson says he will be missed by all who knew him.
