Charges have officially been laid following the incident on Friday where a Yellokwnife pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in the downtown core.
The incident occurred right around 5:00pm on Friday, September 27th. Once officers arrived on the scene, they found a 62-year-old woman in severe condition. She was taken to the hospital and later pronounced as deceased.
The driver was arrested on the scene, and the investigation lead officers to believe that he may have been intoxicated. The 34-year-old Deline man has been charged with:
- Operation while Impaired to a Conveyance, and
- Operation while Impaired of a Conveyance causing death.
He has already appeared before a Justice of the Peace, and has a follow-up court appearance in Yellowknife Territorial Court on October 29th.
This matter remains under investigation in partnership with the Office of the Chief Coroner. The RCMP believes that there are witnesses to this event that could aid in the investigation. Anyone who may have seen what happened is encouraged to contact the RCMP at 669-1111.
