The Western Arctic Moving Pictures group is once again getting ready to hold the Yellowknife International Film Festival.
The 2024 Film Festival will be the 18th anniversary of the annual showcase. This year, over the course of five days, Yellowknife’s Capitol Theatre will be showing films from eleven different countries. The lineup includes five online documentaries, nine in-person feature films, four in-person short films, and one special presentation that will be held at NACC.
The Festival will be running from November 6th to the 10th. The special event at NACC will be a free presentation known as “In Conversation With,” and will feature discussions with the creative team behind the Richard Van Camp adaptation Inkwo for When the Starving Return and features: Richard Van Camp, Amanda Strong, Georgina Franki, and more special guests.
Some other notable events of the Festival will include the opening night film: Matthew Rankin’s Universal Language on November 6 at 7pm, Beautiful Quebec Short Films on November 7 at 7pm, Karl R. Hearne’s The G on November 7 at 9pm, and Northern Shorts on November 10 at 7pm which features 7 local filmmakers from the Northwest Territories, and Yukon.
New to the Festival this year is a Local Filmmaking Award from the NWT Film Commission. This award is intended only for NWT filmmakers, and works to celebrate the work done by those local filmmakers. The award will be presented on Saturday, November 10th, after the Northern Shorts screening at the Captiol Theatre.
