Schedule of Events Announced for Waste Reduction Week

Waste Reduction Week is right around the corner, and Ecology North has shared their official schedule of events that they will be putting together.

From October 19th to the 25th, a series of different events will be held that are each designed to help teach residents how they can reuse older materials and reduce the amount of waste that they produce.

The schedule is as follows:

Saturday, October 19th – a clothing swap event at Mildred Hall School from 9am to 2pm. Locals are encouraged to go through their closets for any gently used clothes that they are no longer using. Donations are asked to be sent in on Friday, October 18th from 6-7pm at the school. Participants on Saturday will be able to shop for free.

Sunday, October 20th – Recycling Stories at the Public Library from 3pm to 4pm. Volunteer Rachel Lewis will be reading “Can I Recycle This? A Kid’s Guide to Better Recycling and How to Reduce Single-Use Plastics.” This event is intended for young children.

Monday, October 21st – Plastic Weaving at the Ecology North office, 5016 50th Ave. An educational session on how to turn used plastic products into new items, such as bracelets and rugs. Guests are encouraged to bring their own soft plastic items from home, such as candy wrappers and grocery bags.

Tuesday, October 22nd – Paper Making from 4pm to 5:30pm at the Public Library. The NWT Literacy Council will be teaching guests on how to use old paper to create newer artistic projects.

Tuesday, October 22nd – Textile Repairing at Makerspace, 5001, Forrest Drive. From 6pm to 8pm, an opportunity to repair damaged clothing, as well as learning how to mend tears by oneself.

Wednesday, October 23rd – Plastic Upcycling from 6pm to 8pm at Makerspace. Learn how to use excess 3D printing plastic into keychains, earrings, and other accessories.

Thursday, October 24th – Scrappy Scrunchies from 6pm to 8pm at Makerspace. A DIY workshop where guests can learn to take excess pieces of fabric and turn them into scrunchies. Fabric scraps will be provided, though participants are encouraged to bring in their own pieces.

Friday, October 25th – Zero Food Waste from 12pm to 1pm at Makerspace. Run by YK Food Rescue, the final event of the week will teach participants how to pickle, vacuum seal, and make broth. Food scraps and vegetables will be provided, though guests are welcome to bring their own.

 

All events are free to participate in, though Ecology North will be accepting donations to aid in their efforts.
