City of Yellowknife Beginning Snow Cleaning Services

The City of Yellowknife appears to be getting a head start on it’s snow cleaning services.

Normally, the City doesn’t start on clearing the streets of snow until at least December, but as commuters made their way into work on Monday morning, advisory signs could be seen set up along a few select streets.

For November 4th, the streets being cleaned that night are 48th Street from 49th Avenue to 52nd avenue, and 52nd Avenue from 56th Street to 51st Street.

The official schedule has been shared for the rest of the week as well.

On Tuesday, November 5th, 49th Street will be cleaned from McMahon walking trail to 52nd Avenue, as well as 52nd Avenue from 46th Street to Franklin Avenue.

On Wednesday, November 6th, 50th Street will be cleaned from 49th Avenue to 52nd Avenue. 49th Avenue will be cleaned from 48th Street to 46th Street, and 52nd Avenue will be cleaned from 51st Street to 46th Street.

On Thursday, November 7th, 51st Avenue will  be cleaned from 52nd Street to 46th Street, and 51st Street will be cleaned from 49th Avenue to 52nd Avenue.

Finally, on Friday, November 8th, 46th Street will be cleaned from the Welehdeh Catholic School to 52nd Avenue, and 52nd Street will be cleaned from 49th Avenue to the Bison Apartments complex.

Additionally, residents are advised that should the city experience unexpected heavy snowfall, crews may be left with no choice but to push snow from the roads and up onto curbs in order to make sure that roads stay open. If this happens, residents will be responsible for clearing the excess snow from their own properties.

Snow removal generally happens once in residential areas, and twice in the downtown area. Snow removal is conducted by a grader removing the snow from roads, and sidewalks when they are able. Residents must have their parked vehicles out of the way when the cleaning service begins, or they will be towed away.
