The Fort Simpson Housing Authority was able to come to an agreement with striking members of the Union of Northern Workers.
Members of the UNW Local 13 were on the picket lines for fifty-three days in order to secure better wages that reflect the work they do on the houses in the community.
The newly secured deal gives workers of the Fort Simpson Housing Authority economic increases the come to within half a percentage point of what GNWT workers earn themselves. Other improvements in the negotiations include a land acknowledgement statement, additional parental and civic duty leave, and a requirement that the Employer pay for any note requested to certify sick leave.
Josee-Anne Spirito, the PSAC North Regional Executive Vice President, said in a statement that “When workers stand together for fair wages and better working conditions, it strengthens not only their workplaces but also the services families rely on across the North. As we continue to fight for improved housing services, fair wages, or stronger protections for the next generation of workers, we hope the GNWT will stand behind its commitment to workers and families and fund housing like it matters.”
The Fort Simpson Housing Authority works on more than 180 housing units within the area, and provide additional services to Jean Marie River, Sambaa K’e, Nahanni Butte, and Wrigley. Now that the new agreement is in place, the striking employees have already returned to their work.
