Yellowknife’s St Patrick High School is continuing a more than 20-year tradition with the Salvation Army.
On Wednesday, December 18th, students from St Pat’s Interact Student Club will be forming a human line from the school to the Salvation Army building. They will be transferring by hand thousands of pounds of food to help keep the food bank supplied for the holidays.
Tony Brushett, the Executive Director for the Salvation Army, shared that the donation usually supplies between 3,000 to 4,000 pounds of food every year. He added that the donation will help get things back on track after the Canada Post strike.
“While we are giving everyone generous grocery gift cards for Christmas, there is no doubt that most of our clientele will be struggling again right after the holidays. So, this is significant. Our hope is, with Canada Post now going back to work tomorrow, that the mail in donations will get back on track. Those are usually in the area of $10,000 to $15,000 every December.”
The City of Yellowknife will be closing Franklin Avenue at 45th Street for approximately twenty minutes to allow the donation to go uninterrupted.
