RCMP Warns Northerners of New Email Scam

The Territorial RCMP are warning the public of a new email scam that has been reported in the North.

This latest scam has been reported all around the country. The nature of the scam has the culprit pose as a police officer, even so far as to use the name of a real officer, and then accusing the victim of committing some kind of illegal activity. The scammer will then threaten some kind of action taken against the victim if they do not reply.

The scammer will then supply a fake email that will request payment from the victim.

A recent version of this scam suggested that the victim had been visiting child pornography sites, and had only 48 hours to respond before some kind of punishment would supposedly be enforced.

Scams like these are common, and can often be identified by the fake email addresses, poor spelling, and the fact that the RCMP does not conduct their business in this manner.

If anyone receives an email like this from any organization, it is recommended that the recipient reach out to the organization on their own terms to verify the claim. Any emails that turn out to be scams should be ignored. Do not respond, or click on any provided links.
