Yellowknife Dog Owners Advised to Keep Closer Eyes on Pets to Avoid Increased Fees

The City of Yellowknife is reminding dog owners that the impoundment fee rose to $250 from $100 on January 1st. In a news release, the city states that the new fee, which was approved by council in December, applies to dog owners whose pet is being held due to it being separated from its owner.

The city adds the increase supports the cost of daily care when dogs have to be impounded. Dog owners are encouraged to make sure their pets are properly licensed and controlled to avoid the impoundment fees.

The City states it is committed to community safety and promoting responsible dog ownership. Municipal Enforcement, or blyaw officers are trained and equipped to deal with any sort of complaint or call involving dogs to ensure compliance with City by-laws.

In A Facebook post this week. the NWT SPCA stated that the $250 impoundment fee goes to the city not the animal shelter. It adds that if owners do not claim their dog through bylaw within five days, the dog will end up at the shelter.

The SPCA says its fear is that due to the increase in fees, owners will not claim their dogs. It too is asking dog owners to keep a close eye on their pets at all times.

Residents can find more information on animal control on the City’s website.
