In order to help a Yellowknife entrepreneur with her business, the Gahcho Kue Mine will be making a special donation.
The entrepreneur in question is Karine Gignac, who runs the Net Composting Solutions company. As a part of the Mine’s commitment to supporting female-led businesses and to waste reduction and recycling, Gahcho Kue is donating a full surplus composter to Gignac.
While NCS already has one composter in operation, it is expected that once the new unit is operational, Gignac will be able to produce up to 20,000 bags of compost per year, which will then be made available to locals in Yellowknife and surrounding communities.
The composter was first purchased by Gahcho Que in 2018 at a cost of approximately $100,000. This machine takes about six to eight weeks to convert organic materials into compost. It processes materials at a temperature of about 55 degrees to help eliminate bacteria.
Kelly Brenton, the Social Performance Manager for De Beers Group, expressed her confidence in Gignac’s ability to make full use of the machine.
“NCS has demonstrated the capacity to utilize the in-vessel composter to its maximum potential, benefiting the territory by eliminating a previously unmanaged waste stream. We are so pleased to help enable this small business to grow and create a useful product out of organic waste material.”
Gignac herself has said that this second composter will help make NCS a more sustainable business and will allow her to look into using different kinds of feed stock.
