Premier R.J. Simpson has shared some of his thoughts on the most recent development of the tariff situation between the Governments of Canada and the United States.
He begins by saying that he feels that the decision by President Donald Trump and his administration to impose tariffs on Canada and Canadian goods is “unjustified, short sighted, and harmful to businesses and consumers on both sides of the border.” Premier Simpson adds that he stands with the Prime Minister and the other Premiers in defying these measures and working towards a stronger and more rational response.
Simpson explains that while the NWT is not as reliant on American goods as other parts of Canada, there will still be an impact felt by Northern residents. As a result, the GNWT is working with other provincial and territorial governments to work on a unified approach to the issue.
Some of the GNWT’s ideas include:
- Reviewing trade policies to reduce purchasing U.S. goods wherever possible
- Halt all purchase of American goods by the Northwest Territories Liquor and Cannabis Commission, and
- Communicate closely with Indigenous governments and community leaders in the business sector to better reflect the needs of all Northerners.
Premier Simpson also spoke about finding new ways to make the North more self-reliant, and less vulnerable to trade disagreements that have little to do with the NWT.
“This moment should be a turning point—an opportunity to build a stronger, more self-sufficient, and more connected North. For too long, the North has been left out of critical nation-building investments. It is time for real commitments to infrastructure, energy security, and resource development—not just for the benefit of Northerners, but for the security and prosperity of all Canadians.”
Simpson ended his thoughts by saying that the GNWT will continue to work with the Government of Canada and do what they can to aid the country’s economic strength.
