The Government of Canada will be making an investment of $411,513, which will be going towards a number of senior’s programs.
The announcement was made by MP Michael McLeod, who was speaking on behalf of Joanne Thompson, Canada’s Minister for Seniors. The money will be going to seventeen community-based projects across the Territory. This money will be supporting projects that are designed to keep seniors active and engaged in their communities. This investment was made possible by a proposal of support from the New Horizons for Seniors Program.
The New Horizons for Seniors Program supports projects that support a number of important priorities. These conditions include supporting healthy living, preventing abuse, celebrating diversity and inclusion, and supporting financial security.
MP McLeod said in a statement that “through the New Horizons for Seniors Program, the Government of Canada is providing a wide range of opportunities for seniors in the Northwest Territories to participate in meaningful activities where they can share knowledge, skills and experience to the benefit of others.”
Seniors are one of Canada’s fastest-growing population groups. They will represent almost 25% of the population by 2057 and could reach close to 11 million people within 15 years.
