YK Fire Department holds Memorial Service for Past Heroes

Early in the morning on Monday, March 17th, the Yellowknife Fire Department held a special memorial service for two of their fallen heroes.

Twenty years ago, on March 17th of 2005, a fire broke out at a structure on Old Airport Road. Lieutenant Cyril Fyfe and Firefighter Kevin Olsen were among the responding personnel. Tragically, the two men lost their lives when the roof of the building collapsed with them inside. Kevin Olsen was only a few days into his new career as a firefighter, and died on the scene. LT. Fyfe had served with the Fire Department for eighteen years, and ended up passing away in the hospital after being in a coma for several days.

“As we stand here twenty years later, we reflect on their professionalism, courage, dedication, rank, and the profound impact they had on our community and our department. Lieutenant Fyfe and Firefighter Olsen exemplified the spirit of heroism. They rushed into danger when others were fleeing, driven by an unwavering commitment to protect lives and property. Their bravery serves as a poignant reminder of the risks our firefighters face daily.

“As we remember their sacrifice, let us also remember their legacy. They inspired us to push our limits, to support one another, to serve with honour, strength, and pride.”

Mayor Rebecca Alty was also in attendance, and shared a few words. She spoke on behalf of the City Council in sharing condolences with the families of Fyfe and Olsen. She also expressed her thanks and gratitude to the firefighters who continue to serve today, inspired by the sacrifice of those who came before.
