Diavik Diamond Mine Discovers Rare Yellow Diamond

The Diavik Diamond Mine has just turned up a very rare find!

A notable discovery for Canadian mines, Diavik has unearthed a rare yellow diamond. This stone is rated at 158.20 carat, which makes it only the fifth yellow diamond in Diavik’s twenty-two year history to be rated above 100 carats. Throughout its history, the Diavik Mine has mainly produced the usual white coloured stones, with less than one percent of the mine’s production yielding yellow diamonds.

Matt Breen, the Chief Operating Officer for the Diavik Diamond Mine, called this find a “miracle of nature,” and said that its discovery is a testament to the skill and abilities of the Mine’s workers.

White is the most common colour that diamonds can come in, with yellow being the second most common, though still quite rare. Yellow diamonds are formed when nitrogen enters the stone’s checmical make-up. Nitrogen is considered an impurity for diamonds, so the more nitrogen enters the make-up, the stronger the yellow tone will be.

Patrick Coppens, the General Manager of Sales and Marketing for Rio Tinto, said that “the beauty and purity of Diavik diamonds continues to excite passions amongst all who see them and we look forward to following the onward journey of this very special diamond.”
