GNWT is moving forward with plans to transition to a hybrid public Board of Directors for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation.
The board is currently made up of GNWT employees only, but that will soon change. GNWT announced they will transition to a hybrid Board of Directors that will include members of the public.
“The Northwest Territories Power Corporation plays a critical role in delivering reliable and affordable energy to residents and businesses across the territory. By transitioning to a hybrid public Board of Directors, we are strengthening governance, increasing transparency, and ensuring that decisions reflect the interests of all Northerners,” said Minister Caroline Wawzonek in the April 1 announcement. Minister Wawzonek is the Minister Responsible for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation.
GNWT said the board will include four to eight public members along with two representatives from the GNWT public service.
On April 1 they invited members of the public who are interested in serving on the Board to apply.
“The GNWT is launching an open Expression of Interest process which aligns with best practices for board governance and ensures that NTPC and NT Hydro benefit from strong, independent oversight,” GNWT said in their announcement yesterday.
GNWT public service members will continue in their role to “ensure alignment” with government priorities.
“The GNWT has engaged external experts to support the development of a structured appointment process, including a competency and skills matrix to assess candidates’ qualifications. The goal is to build a diverse and experienced Board that represents the people of the NWT, with an emphasis on Indigenous and regional representation,” GNWT said.
“Avoiding conflicts of interest will also be a key consideration in the appointment process,” they added.
GNWT explained they will “prioritize” candidates who are able to ensure independent oversight “without major conflicts” of interest in relation to government or to special interest groups.
The application deadline is May 15.
GNWT is asking applicants to submit a resume and cover letter to apply.
