Salvation Army sells 400 food hampers over Thanksgiving weekend

It was a busy thanksgiving weekend for the Salvation Army in Yellowknife stuffed with community efforts as Yellowknife enters the holiday season.

According to Executive Director for the Salvation Army in Yellowknife, Tony Brushett, the Salvation Army managed to sell 400 Thanksgiving hampers on Saturday alone, for residents in need.

“We partnered with the Co-op and a group of us, us and our volunteers, came to Co-op in hopes of selling 400 Thanksgiving hampers,” Brushett tells MyTrueNorthNow. “By quarter to three on Saturday they were all sold.”

Brushett adds that the Salvation Army took a different approach with this year’s hampers, providing the service to anyone that needs it.

“They’re going to basically anybody who has a need, so it’s a bit different than people normally using the foodbank.”

“We’ve noticed that since coming back from the evacuation, there are people struggling with food security.”

To finish off the weekend, the Salvation Army hosted a hot turkey dinner for their in-house clients, and after their residents were fed, anyone in the city was welcome to partake in the holiday feast.
