YK Film Festival Bringing a Number of Special Panels & Workshops

The Yellowknife International Film Festival has released their full schedule of special events.

Held every year as a celebration of indie and Indigenous filmmaking, the YKIFF holds a number of premiers from Northern directors, as well as various panels and workshops that provide an inside look into the different practices and brainstorming tactics that go into making a movie.

These additional events will be taking place rom November 8th to the 10th at the Explorer Hotel.

On Friday, November 8th:

At 1:30, there will be a Puppet Making Workshop hosted by Inkwo puppet crafters Georgina Hayns and Patrick Zung.

At 5:30 is Pitching 101, a workshop discussing how aspiring filmmakers can best present their ideas to others, and convince producers to back them up.

At 6:30 is the Stop Motion Animation Workshop. This will discuss the laborious and lengthy process of frame-by-frame model work with special guests Amanda Strong, Richard Van Camp, Tantoo Cardinal, and two members of the Inkwo team.

At 8:00 is Pitch This! This will be a competition to see who can give the best presentation of their project to a panel of judges for a chance to win a $5,000 cash prize, and a year of free equipment rentals to help finish their film.

On Saturday, November 9th:

At 12:00, various members of the Indigenous Screen Office will be discussing the unique experiences and approaches of Indigenous filmmakers at the Indigenous Creators Roundtable.

At 1:00 is multiple One-on-One Meetings with assorted industry leaders, funders, and other notable decision makers.

At 3:00 is Editing 101. Editing can be a very important part of a film’s identity, and is an aspect of filmmaking that many people can end up overlooking. This workshop will show the workflow behind editing, the collaborative process, and how AI tools can be used to help editors.

Saturday is wrapped up at 9:00 with the Saturday Soiree.

On Sunday, November 10th:

At 12:00 is a masterclass on Writing a Feature Script with Heather Taylor.

At 2:00 is a discussion on Climate Stories and Sustainable Productions.

At 3:00 is a discussion on Opportunities for Northern and Indigenous Producers.

Finally, at 4:00 will be an Industry Mixer and Closing Reception event, presented by the NWT Film Commission.
