Status of Women Council Set to Lead Remembrance Event

Multiple women’s advocacy groups will be taking part in a special ceremony on December 6th to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

A special vigil will be held in the Great Hall of the NWT Legislative Assembly. The groups taking part will be the Status of Women Council of the NWT, the Native Women’s Association, the Yellowknife Women’s Society, the NWT Disabilities Council, and the YWCA NWT.

The National Day of Remembrance honours 14 young women who were murdered in 1989 at a polytechnic school in Montreal. The Council will be honouring not just these women, but all other women who have been victims of misogynistic violence. The Northwest Territories has one of the highest rates of gender-based violence in the country.

The December 6th event will begin at 6:00pm, and will include guest speakrs, a rose-laying ceremony, a moment of silence, and a performance of classical music. Refreshments and mental health supports will be available during the vent as well.

The numerous groups behind this event are hoping that it will help to educate residents about gender-based violence, and that guests will take it as a call to action to address the issue across the North, and across Canada.
