Yellowknife’s Solid Waste Facility will be partially closed for the immediate future as the City officially begins extinguishing efforts on a subsurface fire that has been burning at the location for some time.
The City will be prioritizing the resources that are needed to put out the fire and ensure the safety of the community. This effort will be carried out while following the Yellowknife Landfill Control and Risk Reduction Plan, as well as the Solid Waste Association of North America.
Aside from the affected area, the rest of the Sollid Waste Facility will remain open for its regular Tuesday to Friday hours. The Facility will be closed on the weekends until this situation has been resolved. If needed, the City will consider closing the entire facility if needed.
Clear signs and barriers will be set up to mark the dangerous area. The City is advising residents that smoke and smells may be more noticeable in the area around the Facility as this work is being conducted. The City is constantly keeping an eye on the air quality in that area.
