The organization known as Supporting Wellbeing is hosting a special program to train new instructors.
One of the main obstacles that SWB runs into is the limited number of trained facilitators who can pass on the teachings that the group offers. Founded in 2018 with help from the NWT Recreation and Parks Association, SWB focuses on providing resources and teachings to people who themselves offer on the land programming to others, all focused on mental health challenges.
The issue that SWB has run into of late is that they have been operating with only five totl instructors. Their new program is set up in Fort Simpson, and is looking to increase SWB’snumber of instructors so that they can in turn provide the training that the organization normally offers. This training launches this week, and will last until March 2nd. It will consist of a mix of classroom learning and on the land instruction.
Supporting Wellbeing has also begun their annual application opportunities for Indigenous groups, non-profits, and government organizations to sign up for one of their mental health training sessions. This course focuses on helping those who are dealing with mental health struggles and trauma.
The organization currently has funding and capacity to support five free trainings per year and is prioritizing communities outside of Yellowknife.
