Three people in Hay River has received drug charges after a police investigation within the community.
A call was made on March 26th for officers to come out to the Kátł’odeeche First Nations Reserve and keep order during a dispute. During the interaction, officers ended up arresting one individual, who was found to be in possession of a small amount of cocaine and an unsecured firearm. Two other individuals were also arrested as the incident carried on.
A search warrant was obtained for the rest of the residence, and the subsequent investigation revealed an additional 60 grams of cocaine, as well as two more firearms; a long gun, and a pistol.
Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, an unnamed 17-year-old from Alberta was one of the individuals arrested, and is being charged with:
- Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking,
- Unauthorized Possession of a Restricted Weapon,
- Unauthroized Possession of a Firearm, and
- Unsafe Storage of a Firearm
The other two indiviuals, 43-year-old Daryl Smallgeese and 33-year-old Kyle Norn, both from the Kátł’odeeche First Nation, have both been charged with:
- Unauthorized Possession of a Restricted Weapon
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, and
- Unsafe Storage of Firearms
Kyle Norn is also facing the charge of Failure to Comply with Release Order Conditions, as he was previously released on bail under several conditions.
Both Norn and the Alberta youth have appeared in court, and since been returned to custody. Meanwhile, Smallgeese has been released on the condition that he attend a court date in Hay River.
