Dettah Ice Road Closed for the Season, among other Seasonal Roads

The NWT’s various winter roads are coming to a close once again.

With the temperatures rising and ice rapidly melting, the handful of the Territory’s seasonal roads have begun to close down for the spring and summer seasons.

The Dettah Ice road that connects the small Indigenous community to the City of Yellowknife has been closed down. This road sees much use throughout the winter, as it more than halves the travel time between the two communities. According to the twenty-year-average reported by the GNWT’s Department of Infrastructure, the Dettah road has closed slightly ahead of its expected date of April 16^th.

Also closed down for the season is the Nahanni Butte Ice Road, as of April 10^th. The Mackenzie River Ice Crossing at Tulita and the Great Bear Lake Ice Crossing to Deline were also both closed down as of April 7^th.

At the time of writing, the Liard River Crossing and the Mackenzie River/N’Dulee Crossing are both still open, but will likely be closing soon.

Finally, the Peel River Crossing, the Tsiigehtchic Ice Crossing, and the Arctic Red River Crossing, both along Highway 8, are still open at this time.
