Today Ecole St. Patrick High School hosted a forum for the NWT federal election candidates. Liberal MP Candidate Rebecca Alty, Conservative MP Candidate Kimberly Fairman and NDP MP Candidate Kelvin Kotchilea joined the forum.
Over one hundred students from the school attended and were joined by grade 7 students from Weledeh. “ESPHS wants current and future students to be aware of political processes and the importance of being informed, engaged voters,” said ESPHS.
Candidates had two minutes to introduce themselves and tell the students a bit about who they are and why they chose to run in this election before responding to questions asked by the students.
“This is a forum, not a debate, as it is intended to give the candidates an opportunity to explain their platforms, ideas, and plans. Some of the ESPHS students will be able to vote this year, and all students will participate in the Student Vote on April 25, the results of which will be released after the polls close on the 28,” said ESPHS
Over 7,000 schools across the country are participating in the Student Vote Canada election program. More than a million students are taking part in the student vote, heading to the polls. Representatives behind the initiative say it brings democracy into motion in classrooms. Students have an opportunity to engage the parties and their platforms, talk about issues and cast their votes for MP candidates. Program representatives explain that the initiative offers a lens into the perspectives and values of the nation’s youth. Student vote results will be announced after polls close on election day April 28.
